Journey to Joy

Do difficulties, detours, distractions, and delays steal my joy? They try, but fail. The journey to joy was long and worth every moment.” K.L. Hale

“Thank you, Father, for difficulties, detours, distractions, and delight! Keep me teachable so your light shines no matter what.” My posture of praise and attitude of gratitude is ONLY because of Christ Jesus. My journey to joy has been jubilant because of what its produced.

How do I navigate my joy journey?

My road map and handy atlas can’t predict every detour or unexpected accident. My guidebook, the WORD, though, provides wisdom and applications for these! I wrote a letter to my ten-year-old self last night. In it, I shared the differences between happiness and true joy. My journey to joy has included loss, love, and lots of learning. Wishing on a star, carrying a good luck charm, staying positive, and even being in nature will never be the TRUE SOURCE of my joy.

Just as hope, peace, and love. 💚

Who or what is my source of joy?

Jesus, you are the source of my real joy! Thank you for being a hiking friend and my forever traveling buddy. You giggle at goofs, forgive my faults, and hold me when I cry! Because of you, I’m alive! Your indwelling advocate, the Holy Spirit, living in ME, provides peace, love, hope, and JOY. I truly have the “joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart … Because of YOU, I can sing. What about you, friends? Will you sing along?

K’s Catch-Up–

My heart and prayers are with dear blogging friends and loved ones who have experienced tremendous loss. To those who are alone during this season–May God provide comfort and friends offer support! Life isn’t easy, but I know a God who wants to walk with you in sunshine AND storms. To have joy in unspeakable circumstances proves the source is greater than us! All of you are blessings to me! Your stories of your journeys, love, losses, and wins inspire me. Let’s continue to lift one another in truth, love, humor, and prayers. Prayer warriors, will you please pray for my son, Jarrod, as he spends Christmas in Japan, away from his family? Thank you to all who serve and have to spend holidays alone! A fun story–my daughter-in-love, Brooke, left Alaska yesterday with her two precious kiddos (my lovely grands) and her Mom. My youngest son, Jay, my other daughter-in-love, Cierra, and precious 3rd grand, Whitley, were flying home from Washington. What are the odds of ALL of them meeting at the Seattle airport? What a great boost to my evening! My little world travelers all together at the airport! THAT’S DIVINE!

My journey of NET continues. This week two nurse navigators (God bless you Reagan and Michelle) helped me acquire oxygen for SIX MONTHS! After another appointment this week, I will continue monitoring bone pain and stay on current treatment. I can’t say thank you enough for ALL the SUPPORT, love, and prayers! Many of you know I’m struggling with my eyes, hands, and balancing responsibilities. I KNOW that we ALL HAVE STRUGGLES, so THANK YOU for your grace and understanding! If you or a loved one suffer from chronic disease, cancer, or anything that HALTS your habits, know that you are NOT alone.

Rivers of Resilience

Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy;

Psalm 98:8

He was criticized for abandoning his party. He was fierce competition for the Democrats. Progressive? A bull moose. He was my age when he gave his speech that night in 1912.  Theodore Roosevelt spoke of morality, responsibility, and compassion—not of his other opponents. Some say if he couldn’t rule, he would ruin. Injured pride and greed? Was he crazy?

He defied hardships and lost himself in danger. Theodore wasn’t a stranger to loss. On Valentine’s Day, at the age of 25, his mom, Martha, died of typhoid fever. Eleven hours later, his wife, Alice Lee Roosevelt (two days after giving birth to his daughter) died of a kidney disorder.
He faced his fears and the frontier. Inconvenience and hard places kept his body and mind free from aches.

Defeats, tragedies, obstacles, and weaknesses only grew his grit. Adventures in the outdoors and willpower quenched Theodore Roosevelt’s thirst for greatness.
It wasn’t any surprise to his 2nd wife he would break away again…to a punishing adventure.
Punishment through physical challenges or punishment to himself for the pain and loneliness?

“On the banks of the River of Doubt, the same unyielding will and thirst for achievement brought him face to face with the absolute limits of his strength.” (Millard 2005)

After his humiliating election defeat in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt set his sights on the most punishing physical challenge he could find the first descent of an unmapped, rapids-choked tributary of the Amazon. Together with his son Kermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer Candido Mariano da silva Rondon, Roosevelt faced an unbelievable series of hardships: they lost their canoes and supplies to punishing whitewater rapids, and endured starvation, attacks, disease, drowning, and a murder with their own ranks. In the end, three men would die, and Roosevelt would be brought to the brink of suicide, but the expedition accomplished a seemingly impossible feat, and changed the map of the Western Hemisphere forever.” (Millard 2005)

“Who hears the rippling of rivers will not utterly despair of anything.”

Henry David Thoreau

For those of you familiar with President Roosevelt’s life, you might know of the tragic death of his son, Kermit (who accompanied him on this river trip). I was once in despair. It’s not that I didn’t want to be HERE. Just not in pain. Mental Health is not a disease. It is part of all of us. What flows through us and gives us hope? How do we face challenges and ride the rapids? How can we recognize the need for utter relief and build resiliency?

Resilience is the residency of Christ in my heart. The rapids we face are the battles for our hearts.💛

Days of floating the Ozarks’ rivers flow through my soul. Tranquil tributaries turned to raging rapids at times. The gushes and torrents were tough teachers. My resolve to rally runs like rivers. Droughts will deplete. Rainfall replenishes. Floods forge with my faith. Rivers rally my resilience. There’s healing in hard times-continued creek crossing despite crisis.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you…Isaiah 43:2

“The life of God is described in scripture as a river–a powerful, gorgeous, unceasing, everrenewing, ever-flowing river.” (Eldridge 13).

“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you. A joy.” Rumi

Our Creator can calm currents. His love and grace will flow freely through the tributaries of your heart. 🩷

May the river of life from God flow in and through us and take residency of our hearts.

K.L. Hale

I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs. Isaiah 41:18

“Love is the river of life in the world.” Henry Ward Beecher

“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.”

Norman Maclean, American author, from “A River Runs Through It” (1976).

“You drown not by falling into a river, but by staying submerged in it.” – Paulo Coelho, Brazilian author, from “The Alchemist” (1988).

‘”The river has great wisdom and whispers its secrets to the hearts of men.”

Mark Twain, “Life on the Mississippi” (1883).

Then Came the Morning

Seven beautiful people were tragically killed in a plane crash on Friday afternoon: Kelly Nelon Clark, her husband, Jason, and daughter and son-in-law, Amber Nelon Kister and Nathan Kistler, Assistant Melodie Hodges, pilot Larry Haylie and his wife, Melissa. They were traveling to join the Gaither’s Alaskan Cruise.

Surviving daughter, Autumn Nelon Streetman, and husband, Jamie thank people for their prayers and support for them, their soon-to-be-born baby boy, and Jason’s parents.https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna163931

May we all honor and remember their beautiful music (I’ve listened to them for many years).

In honoring this gifted family, we can pay tribute to those in our lives that have journeyed home~and those that remain in our immediate midst.

The brevity of life braces us for the brutal, breathless, breathtaking, and brilliant.

Do you know how loved you are?💚

Jesus, My Journey, & June

May melted with makeshift memories, medicines, and mindfulness. June jumped in and jolted me. It’s jam-packed. Will June have me juggling, jotting, and jaundiced (I couldn’t help that ;-)?

Jesus

When asked, “How do you not worry? How do you have faith? How do you have joy?”

“Oh, you haven’t met HIM yet, have you?” I replied.

Experiences like this happen to me frequently while hiking. My sometimes silent sanctuary. The few humans exploring the area acknowledged they knew how loved they were when I asked them. “Jesus, thank you for walking alongside me. Which path should I take?” The birds sang and the wind whispered again. Cool breezes calmed my consciousness. Clarification cleared my confusion. Is that a cross? Later, a cardinal directed me on the path least traveled. “Don’t take your eyes off of me, Karla.”

The peace that passes all understanding. A compassion that is combustible with Christ. Don’t gasp or grimace over guilt. Guilt is Godless. Sorrow is Godly. Can we stop taking trips of guilt? Will we feel sorrow for one another? Worry wastes and brokenness will beg. Jesus will meet you there.

Journey

Do you get caught up in the world’s web? Feelings, emotions, and circumstances will shift, swirl, and spin. Without warning you’re caught in confusion and chaos. To the right you see rubble, to the left you spot loss, and straight ahead is suspicion.

For me? I see forever and I view victory.

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

C.S. Lewis

Although I’m not living in poverty, my soul is. It’s an emptiness and neediness that Jesus calls, “poor in spirit” (Matt 5:3). Without God, I’m incomplete. Repair is not needed–just restoration and reconciliation. You and I are not “wretched” souls. We have wretched life circumstances and our brokenness motivates us beyond ourselves. Once I thought all was perfect; my awareness was lacking. God IS love. When the dust settles and your heart hurts what will heal? Compassion, love, and grace. You will never be “good” enough. The opposite of bad is not good–it’s love.

“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”

C.S. Lewis

“We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.”

1 John 4:16

June

Jeez, June. You can’t jar me! I’ll be in 7th heaven when my favorite 7 humans pay a visit soon. A 60th wedding anniversary by my favorite couple will be honored. There will be family celebrations, a new scan for me, more bloodwork and a visit, and a better prescription to see. June, we’ll be fine. There will be holidays, birthdays, routines, and more–I’m sure the unexpected will be in store. As temperatures rise and attitudes flare, keep us grounded and safe, keep love in the air.

I’m living my reality and truth. God himself is called the “God of truth” (Ps 31:5). Jesus calls himself the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). The Holy Spirit is also called the truth (1 John 5:6).

I’m embracing my imperfection with faith, flannel (not as much with these warmer temps), and fresh air. May truth guide you to a place where love resides. Perfection is not needed. Just faith.

Have faith💚
