April’s Anticipation

What do you anticipate for April? My March was a whirlwind of hallways, ‘non-existent’ airport gates, and a ‘March Madness’ that had nothing to do with basketball. April’s Anticipation isn’t just about waiting for the next scan, season, or stage of life—it’s about expecting God to show up in the middle of it all!

D.C., Bethesda, & the NCI/NIH

Our hats were off to the professional NONPAID/OVERWORKED TSA workers. Everything went smoothly in Springfield. Kindness and respect were sprinkled all around too! The weather, and even hailing a taxi at Reagan, proved to be without issues! The history hovering the Potomac hit me differently this time. The blooms of the cherry blossoms, sweet driver, and little construction made for a pleasant drive to Bethesda, MD.

Our stay at the hotel is a story on its own. With its loose and aging wallpaper, a broken elevator that added an adventure (we were on the 5th floor), and quirky lamps that had their own character, the experience was quite memorable! We joked that Gremlins had come to play tricks on us before our arrival. The front desk attendant later brought us a TV remote, proudly announcing, “It doesn’t have a back on it, but it has new batteries!” Even though we didn’t plan to watch it, it brought a smile to our faces! Later, I found it amusing when the shower handle was loose and spun around as I searched for the perfect setting to enjoy hot water. I thought of the young man who sweetly said, “On behalf of BLANK, I’d like to apologize for everything.”

After a day of scans and blood draws at the Institute, we learned that storms in the Midwest would delay our connecting flight. A missed flight was anticipated! After a LONG call with United, our flight was rerouted. One more sleep and we would head home!

March Madness

Our departure day was filled with big-hearted goodbyes and blessings to the AMAZING people at the hotel and NIH. Even the shuttle ride to the airport was light-hearted. My body was tired, but my spirits were high when I saw the security line moving quickly. We didn’t even have to show our boarding pass (this is an essential part of the story). With TIME TO SPARE we decided to find our gate first and then enjoy a lunch. FINDING the gate was a problem. MANY steps (with another worker helping us) proved wasted when we realized that there was NO GATE C-19! Did you know two airports serve D.C.?

There was NO TIME to spare as I anticipated missing our next flight. The 40-minute taxi ride to Dulles airport proved to be a MIRACLE! More lessons learned, as I have come to expect!

Although we anticipated long lines, we were pleasantly surprised by short and swift-moving lines at the correct airport. We made it to our gate on time for loading!

The plane landed in Dallas several hours later. With anticipated time on our hands, it was suggested by a kind worker to take the monorail to terminal D. There would more choices for food! By the time we finished our meal, notifications from United Airlines were “dinging”. Our NEXT flight was delayed and we would miss our connecting flight by 20 minutes. What would YOU anticipate at this time?

After a ride back to the terminal, and miles of steps, we met an angel by the name of Shennel. Our flights were changed again–but in a miraculous and amazing way (tears and hugs for Shennel included!)!

It wasn’t anticipated, but our DIRECT flight home was with a different airline. We landed an hour earlier than our original flight. Totally unexpected!

A City’s Anticipation

The anticipation of an overthrown government provided the energy the people needed! “Hosanna!” (“Save Us!” in Hebrew) The crowd in Jerusalem might have expected a king on a warhorse. Jesus entered on a donkey–a King of peace. He didn’t revolt. From the tears in the Garden, betrayel, to the brutal beating and the cross, he offered Himself as a sacrifice.

It’s a reminder that my own expectations of how a season ‘should’ go often pale in comparison to how God chooses to work miracles in the middle of a mess! As I anticipate the celebration of the cross and Jesus’ ascension, I’m reminded that even when the plan seems to fall apart, the Resurrection proves that God is the Master of the unexpecting ending. Simply, He is Risen, He is reigning, and He is right in the middle of it ALL.

The Latest Reroute

Althought the trip had many unanticipated situations (including a change from the ORIGINAL trip dates), things happened that I did anticipate–meeting amazing people and experiencing miraculous moments! Thank you, dear friend/sister Barbara, for accompanying me on the adventerous trip! I’m anticipating a wonderful April!

The recovery from the trip and skin cancer excision surgery has taken longer than expected. Several follow-up appointments have resulted in a change of flight schedules treatment plans. On Monday, I’ll visit the surgical oncologist to begin scheduling internal radiation. That late afternoon I’ll begin monthly injections.

I’m SO thankful the liver is stable. However, the bone and lymph node progression must be treated. The bone mets impact my quality of life in tremendous ways. I anticipate future new treatments and options. The doctors on my team are fabulous and caring!

My journey with this chronic cancer often feels like that long walk to find a non-existent gate C-19–tiring, confusing, and filled with wasted steps. EVERY DETOUR led me EXACTLY where I needed to be. When asked how I stay positive or joyful, you can anticipate this consistent answer–“I’ll never base my outlook on circumstances–it will be based on the power of Christ IN ME.” I’m not JUST anticipating that things will be better LATER… in Heaven. I’m living with the joy and power of TODAY. It doesn’t mean that I won’t feel sad or experience heartbreak, confusion, or other emotions. It’s the anticipation of going to the Garden and meeting a Savior who understands it ALL.

We are ALL battling chronic… LIFE. Do you anticipate a feeling of hope and faith? Do you live with a sense of renewal and the promise of a God who is by your side through it all? May you anticipate and experience an April filled with good health, peace, and hope!

Friends, you are SO LOVED. ❣️ Happy Resurrection Weekend!

Praiseworthy People

Do you remember when I introduced you to another Darlene? When time allows, I think you’ll find it encouraging. It took many hours today to condense the book and other things I learned! MY Darlene will always be my FAVORITE though ;-). Click on this link to the page about Darlene Deibler Rose if you want to read an amazing FAITH BLAZER! *Page is listed on the home page menu as well*

Last week, after a skin cancer diagnosis, I wanted to run to THE Garden. So it’s just skin cancer? Big deal! I already have cancer!? “Get to the Garden, Karla.” Jesus HAD to have that time with His Father. He cried in desperation—and acknowledged the truth. How can we have faith and a relationship with Him if we DON’T communicate? But JESUS.

And Darlene. My Mom. And Darlene. The Missionary who lost her husband and she STILL kept the faith. I want FAITH LIKE THAT. What about you? Who do you praise when things are good? Can you PRAISE in the midst of storms? Storms can drown us–or SHAPE us. Instead of Google, I sought HIS face. I counted blessings. Stayed in my patterns (or tried!). I’m not looking for ways to avoid scars anymore. I embrace them. Can we let go of the performances we’ve learned through life? We picked these up after getting stickers as a child. A promotion for good work or a “you look good.” We are raised to be PUT TOGETHER.

Who sits with you when life gets complicated? If life is easy…hold on…it won’t always be. Others will become “uncomfortable” when your life gets messy. We’re supposed to be able-bodied adults and citizens right? Even though GRACE (NOT works–but FAITH IN CHRIST) will put you on a good path, the path is difficult. There’s an enemy out there (and it shouldn’t be us!). When you find that friend that just says, “Hey, something doesn’t seem right, want to share?” KEEP THEM. And be THAT friend.

A dear friend reminded me of this truth, “We are like the 5 people we hang around!” Who are you hanging around? What are your conversations about? It’s OK to LOVE without lingering–you NEED the light! I’m not who I was 30 years ago, 3 years ago, or yesterday (PRAISE GOD!). Let’s stop putting people in boxes from childhood or …yesterday? Do you know who will sit, walk, hike, or cry with you when life gets messy? I do. HE didn’t DIE so that your life would be a perfect performance. It gives him JOY to heal your hurt, sit with you through suffering, and yes, giggle when you giggle! What a spectacular Savior I serve!

Friends and family, thank you for your continued readership and support. There are so many praiseworthy people in our midst. Many have gone on before us. I dedicate this to the servicemen and women who have lost their lives in the last few weeks. To the neighbors fighting daily battles. To the stay-at-home moms wondering if they make a difference. To those who feel their mundane is not making a difference. To the cancer patients receiving treatments as I type this. To someone who just found out a loved one has died. Also, I dedicate this to those who are experiencing joy. Whether it’s a vacation, a new birth in the family, laundry caught up, or a “win” in any area! God, thank you for your blessings; including these special friends.

I count it ALL JOY~💚

Thank you, Jesus. You’re MORE than praiseworthy!

UPDATES & “NEW ON THE WEBSITE”

On Sunday I’ll fly to D.C. and go to the National Cancer Institute for bloodwork & scans (a dear friend is accompanying me). I’m prayerfully positive to return with “stable” news! Once I’m back, I’ll have the pesky skin cancer cut out. Have I mentioned how crucial it is to advocate for yourself? Always seek care if you have a concern or question.

I’ll be very excited to share some new pages on my website. To raise awareness of my cancer, and help support my daily journey, I’m beginning a new ‘venture’. As much as I love being in schools, working with cute dogs and writing is less exposure to germs!

For MANY months I’ve been attempting to create cards. The plan of selling them “morphed” into something larger (that’s God!). The Finley River Shop has items with themes of Finley River and faith. These include coffee cups, stickers, cards, hats, and t-shirts. I want to thank my dear friend, Tim, at Withoutlimit.org, for the many hours of Spirit-led conversations, prayers, and planning for the Finley River Shop. A special thanks to Pam at Everyday Living for her “keen” eye on design. Her input helps with future items. I am also thankful to Martha (MAK) at Anachronism of the Far West for her “do it” encouragement!

Keep in mind that I’m using a 3rd party to fulfill orders. I’m a “small” shop, so I do not have a plan that allows samples. Items have been ordered by several family members and friends. I should receive a hat, mug, & sticker soon–I’ll check quality!

Feel free to take a peek in the menu! I thank you in advance for your support! Be looking for NEW items down the river!

Learning new software, coupled with cancer and keeping up with responsibilities, is challenging. I’m listening, learning, and leaning…all FROM God and ON God. For ON CHRIST the rock is where I MUST stand.

Again, thank YOU for your love, prayers, and support. I hope you know how LOVED YOU ARE. Finley and I are blessed to have you all floating, hiking, and walking alongside us on this journey. God bless you.

Don’t lose faith, my friends. Do you know how loved you are? 💚

Mercy Me, March!

In like a lion, out like a lamb? March, you arrived packing a punch with your paws! Are you feeling overlooked between winter’s chill and spring’s promise, acting out like a middle child just to be noticed? You’re smack dab in the middle of conflicts. March, we know you typically include madness (not just basketball). Will you please leave like a lamb with the promise of renewal? Mercy Me, March!

Life constantly presents me with its juxtapositions: the hybrid of hardness and happiness, sweetness tempered by sourness, the revealed modern life shadowed by melancholy, and stretches of calm that are suddenly interrupted by chaos. These contrasts shape my days and challenge my perspective, reminding me that life isn’t meant to be experienced in only one dimension.

Feeling minuscule, I praised my Maker as another full moon rose. One friend’s life was taken intentionally, while visiting another one struggling to survive. There was a time when I felt harnessed by hopelessness. Miracles, miniscule to massive, kept me orbiting. From hugs and kindness to the miracle of …surviving.❣️

In my own small world, I embrace hope and the promise of our Maker–no matter what!

“Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. Joshua 23:14

You are loved, my friends. Please don’t lose hope. Keep the faith! 💚

A note from K.L.~
The world is still spinning, and many lives around me are facing unspeakable situations. While lives are lost in the war across the globe, there are those fighting wars right here (and in their minds & hearts). A young life is about to end with terminal cancer—and leaving two sons behind. Another family is mourning the loss of a friend who took her life. Meanwhile, I know someone in his late 80s who is ready to leave this world. We are all revolving and spinning—may love and hope ground us. Please be kind—you never know what someone is battling. I’ll request, please, that you not mention “I’m sorry for your loss”. I’m sorry for their families and closest friends! I don’t hurt for me, although I’m saddened by these situations. I’m okay with where I am in life. I’m blessed to STILL be here; even if life is challenging, I have a life. As I revolve, I’ll have future scans and a trip to D.C. More birthday celebrations—one of my sweet D.I.L.s and my precious mom. Another ladies’ fire where we share our lives and walks in Christ. THANK YOU for being HERE, praying for me, and being wonderful friends. I thank God for the gift of this wonderful community. I treasure you all and love you (so does Finn). Karla & Finley ❣️🐾

Passionate Patterns

3–5 minutes

The Olympics ended, and self-discipline was definitely at the forefront of my mind! The dedication, willpower, hard work, and perseverance were a must for these athletes! Is self-discipline achieved through sheer effort, or is it the result of passionate patterns? Self-discipline? Hard work? Faith?

This question lingered as I reflected on the rhythms of my own life. A friend and I discussed our faith walks through the patterns we choose. Years ago, I started to lose momentum, but recognizing these patterns, both good and bad, helps me realign my life. Through the lens of faith, I’ve come to see how habits patterns and spiritual practices interact, shaping my journey and life IN Christ.

What’s faith got to do with it?

“How do you stay HOPEFUL?” I’m asked this often. My hope comes from Christ! He understands my messy human nature and has seen me break bad habits. I’m thankful that God knows my limitations. With Christ in me, I find strength! What patterns bring peace and harness His power?

My PASSION for Christ is what creates more consistent patterns-faith is the fuel! K.L. Hale

What defines your passions? Hobbies? Health? Career? Productivity? Finances? Emotions? Do your patterns promote peace and intimacy in Christ? Or CHAOS?

Prepared for battle? Prepared for pattern!

KL.’s Positive & Passionate Patterns

Do you feel resilient in this topsy turvy ever-changing world of circumstances & situations? How do you practice perseverance? Are you resilent? I am currently reading books by Pioneers of faith that walked YEARS ago who inspire me (thank you, Tim, for these amazing true stories). Have you ever heard of Darlene Diebler Rose or John and Betty Stam? You will soon learn from future articles!  Are you familiar with Corrie Ten Boom and/or Elisabeth Elliot? “God, give me faith like that!”

“Complete surrender and “death to self” creates space for peaceful and positive patterns. Through faith, these patterns become natural, allowing us to use the power God instilled in us.” K.L. Hale

Pattern Disruptions~ what happens when we’re disrupted?

Life has a way of disrupting PATTERNS. Some of us PRACTICE THE WRONG PATTERNS (remember a few years ago when I wrote about Ruminating over the Ruins?). How can we delete, deter, or dissolve these distractions?

Distractions will dismantle faith! The natural pattern of pausing, praying, praising, and persevering provides POWER to detach from the world. K.L. Hale

Friends, I am a “work in progress“! My personal growth and intimacy with my Creator will grow MORE if my patterns match my only pursuit—living IN and FOR Christ. Do you REALLY know how loved you are? I’ll never stop sharing!

Dear family/friends/readers–I began this article two days ago. This morning, as I began preparing to post and read, I learned of a tragedy that occured in the Ozarks. When the alert went out last night, I didn’t realize the severity of the situation unfolding. Deputy Gabriel Rameriz was shot and killed before 4 pm last night after a traffic stop. The suspect escaped and a 9 hour manhunt ended with Deputy Michael Hislope being shot and killed while trying to help rescue two other officers who had been wounded by gunfire. The suspect was shot and killed in the wooded area where he began this travesty. My heart and prayers sincerely go out to the families of these men who proudly served our country (both served in the U.S. Army before joining the Sheriff’s office❤️🤍💙).To the men who are injured and still serving, we are surrounding you and your loved ones, department, and communities in love and prayers. I can’t even begin to understand their loss. I could pray 24/7 and still not include all that needs to be shared with our Creator. When I go quiet on WP you know it’s because I’m prepared for patterns as those around me have to go to battle. I’ll stand for good and the promises that only our Creator can keep. May He be with us all. God bless you, my friends. ❣️🙏🏻

Don’t lose hope! Find faith!❣️
