Ideal Independence

As we approach our nationโ€™s America 250 milestone, I find myself reflecting on what ideal independence really looks likeโ€”not just for a country, but for the heart and the home.

History proves that declaring independence and achieving it are two entirely different milestones.

Historical Heritage

Historically, many have lost their independence in our countryโ€”from our first native settlers, to those enslaved, and to those dependent on others for freedom. Our independence comes at a cost. Good and bad intentions might drive the need for liberty, just as those same intentions are often forced upon others who never wanted to lose their freedom in the first place.

But a declaration is merely the first step. As the National Constitution Center notes, true independence wasn’t legally recognized by Great Britain until the Treaty of Paris was signed seven long years later September 3, 1783.

***For anyone interested, I recently tested my knowledge on the timeline of the American Revolution. If you want to challenge yourself, you can learn about each milestone event right after the quick quiz.***

Divine Dependence

My independence is dictated by my healthโ€”even more so with each passing year. The reality is I will have improvements and limitations. Setbacks and successes. My independence will fluctuate with these inevitable ups and downs.

Shifting from self-reliance to completely trusting God through every situation has proven that being dependent ON HIM is how I continue to find joy in the juggling of day-to-day activities.

If you know this one true Source, you understand.

A doctor told my dad last summer that the best way to stay independent is to ask for help. It makes me wonder:

  • How often do we ask others (or Google) before we ask God?
  • Do we spend alone time with Him to refill and refuel?
  • Do we practice the patterns that propel peace?

If there’s no time with our Creator how can you experience true freedom? INDEPENDENCY becomes the ability to hold truth tightly and worldly things loosely–all because of DEPENDENCY on Him!

Personal Preservation

When I think about kids, I smile. I have memories of my own boys and students who felt they werenโ€™t given enough independence at times. And maybe too much at other times. It’s a balance!

It makes me wonder: Will we use our historyโ€”both personal and patrioticโ€”to teach them how that independence (freedom!) was gained? Or will we simply “skate” over the truth and throw another burger on the grill?

I DO want to celebrate the freedom and faith we enjoy, recognizing that I did absolutely nothing to achieve them. For that, I am incredibly humbled. What if we actively taught and modeled to children the responsibilities and respect that come with these freedoms?

Looking ahead …thirty, forty, or fifty years down the road, how will we honor our own independence?

  • Will we lose the faith and resilience it took to get there?
  • Do we hold so tightly to our self-reliance that we block the blessings of faith, family, friends, and community?
  • What are we fighting to preserve?
  • What are the core pieces of our inner freedom we refuse to let go?

We live in a world that constantly tries to “self-protect”โ€”from future domes to our own homes, whether we are looking at computer screen or physically seen.If your independence begins to fade, to whom will you turn?

We have a huge God who loves us completely. He is longing for us to find Him. When all else is lost, He will forever be the ultimate treasure. True libertyโ€”living fully liberatedโ€”is ultimately found in complete dependence on the only One who is everlasting and true.

Do you know how loved you are?

Happy July, precious friends. Keep the faith. โฃ๏ธ

Friends, the NET community experienced a great loss. From his beloved wife, Lisa: “With a heart full of grief and gratitude, I share that my beloved Tom passed away peacefully…The past few days were surrounded by friends and family, enveloped by love…with so much love and with faith that he is at peace.” Tom Bajoras’s lasting spirit, amazing giftedness in music, and the love for his amazing wife, Lisa, will remain. According to her, he was the kindest and most gentlest soul she’s ever known. He had a rare gift for finding beauty in the ordinary. They recently celebrated their 20th anniversary. It was an honor to write about this extraordinary NET friend and his beloved wife, Lisa. Please join me in praying for Lisa and the entire family, a HUGE host of friends, fans, and followers, and the NCF team through these difficult days.

Tom released this beautiful collection for his beloved, Lisa, not long ago, in celebration of their anniversary. You can find his music on Spotify and Apple.

America the Beautiful

As we approach America’s 250th birthday, it’s a beautiful season to pause, ponder, and practice gratitude for the freedom we share. Our family shares a deep appreciation for those who serve and protect these landsโ€”from the rugged, snow-capped peaks of Alaska to the quiet, winding trails right here in our own neck of the woods. Celebrating Americaโ€™s 250th birthday isn’t just about looking back at history; itโ€™s about looking forward with a foundation of faith. Itโ€™s about cultivating a community that holds onto hope, values unity, and anchors itself in truth, even when the winds of division blow. How can we keep America beautiful…together? โฃ๏ธ

The following podcast was recorded yesterday, June 10th.

As we inch closer to celebrating America's 250th birthday, K.L. shares about the song, "America the Beautiful", and her thoughts about our country and the freedom we have. What makes America beautiful to you? Do you feel we are really ONE NATION…AND under God? Will divisions keep us divided? How do we KNOW the truth?ย  Whatever MIGHT divide us doesn't have to override our faith and belief in ONE NATION—despite opinions or differences. ย  Find faith, keep it. Have hope, friends. Journey into June

The journey to June came swiftly! “Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise!” If you’re from my neck of the woods, you’ve heard this phrase a time or two. I might make plans–but I’m not in ultimate control. Especially when the heavy humidity rolls in and sudden storms start brewing. I was reminded of this in a deeply personal way Sunday. Literally the creek rose and plans shifted!

How will I continue my practices and patterns of peace & savoring our Savior during seasonal shifts?

โ˜€๏ธDawn Devotions

My new morning meditations include singing! Grounding myself in the truth of God’s Word, readings, quotes, and repeated truths promote my peaceful posture! Some mornings are much harder depending on my evening rest. But I don’t waiver from this WAY. My mornings aren’t the same without this (and a cup of coffee!โ˜บ๏ธ)!

๐ŸŒณShaded Stillness

When I’m sheltered by the shade I can enjoy nature and let HIS stillness strengthen me.

“Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, a shelter from the storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.” Isaiah 32:2

๐Ÿ™๐ŸปPorch Prayers

โ€œI like to sit on the front porch of an old cabin I built in the woods and just listen to the birds.โ€ โ€” Johnny Cash

When the air is heavy (thank you humidity), I’ll pause and pray on the porch for someone with a heavy heart! Front or back porch? Which do you have have?

“If I’m going to have to sit on the back porch and watch life pass by, I won’t pass up the opportunity for prayer and praise!” -K.L. Hale

โฃ๏ธBreathing Blessings

As I practice deep breathing (and hopefully my last month needing extra oxygen!) I’ll breathe in DEEPLY ALL my blessings and breathe out the burdens! Let’s take a deep breath together, friends!

When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. – Marcus Aurelius

๐Ÿ’งSoul Sipping

I’m being more intentional at staying hydrated! On the sweltering days I’m going to intentionally “quench” on His promises when I fill my glass of water! Each time I reach for a drink, I’m going to practice letting His living waters wash away the heat of the day’s worries!

How is your journey? Are you walking in rain? Experiencing a drought? Sheltered in a storm? Basking in the sun? Even when the atmosphere feels thick and life gets busy, we can anchor our NEW hearts IN HIM. Surrender, submit, savor, and be satisifed! Oh, what a summer it can be! Happy June, dear friends.

Find faith.Practice your peace.Fall INTO Him.You are loved. โฃ๏ธ

It seems like forever ago since I’ve written in my journal. Despite the nagging elbow/arm pain my soul was uncluttered enough to write several pages/thoughts to create “Journey into June”. Like the rain we’ve had, thoughts fell hard and fast. If you know me, I embrace change.I’ve learned to accept what won’t change–my repeated practices and patterns of peace are 2nd nature now. Because of Christ! However, I have to surrender my OWN agenda. This world will continue to offer chaos for FREE if anyone is interested! Just turn on the news, stay focused on media, and offer opinions to that which doesn’t matter! Soon, you’ll find patterns that refuse to promote peace. Particularly the peace that only God gives. As I journey into June, looking forward to a grand’s birthday, an anniversary celebration, and Father’s Day, I’m reminded that EACH day belongs to a greater power than little ol’ me. But WITH my Heavenly Father, I have the strength to share with you. If you are practicing being “present”, particularly in the Holy Spirit, you understand why my seasons are quieter. Lessening the world noise to focus on what matters most is essential to a healthy soul–and body. May your June be a re-set and a wonderful time of faith, fun, family, & friends. I pray the the presence of God is real in your heart. Much love to all of you~Finley & I.

Memorable May

Congratulations to TSgt Jarrod Snook, my oldest son, for receiving a Leadership Award at Eielson AFB in Alaska. His return to Alaska was a precious, perfect gift! To my youngest son, his wife, Jarrod’s wife, and my grandsโ€”know that our daily communication, although we are all apart, brings me great joy and pride. As we carry on, friends, to celebrate the end of another month and begin summer, may we all “stick” to what matters most! Friends, thank you for supporting Flannel with Faith, my journey, health, and family. As we complete this month, please know I’m holding you in my heart and prayers. Although I’m not able to answer texts or calls in a timely manner, your care and concern are appreciated more than you know! Faith, family, and friendsโ€”don’t lose hope. Sing a song, call a friend, and place all other things on silent. In this sweet silence, miracles can happen!

Have faith. You are loved. โฃ๏ธ
