My Missouri

Welcome to Flannel with Faith, where I celebrate faith, flannel, and fresh air! This March I’m exploring everything that makes my Missouri special! If you’re visiting for the first time, I’m K.L. Hale (a.k.a. Karla) , a small-town Missouri gal and writer who is passionate about my roots. I recently traveled to Maryland and back, but my heart and soul belong to Missouri. That’s why I wrote a creative non-fiction children’s book about my home state to celebrate our bicentennial in 2021.

From the rolling hills to the bustling cities, there’s something for everyone in this great state. So, whether you’re a long-time resident or just passing through, I hope you’ll find something to love about Missouri!

As the mighty Mississippi and the Missouri rivers flow through my home state, memories drift through me. My deep roots began as a tiny seed sowed with faith, family, and friends in small-town Missouri.

Sometimes called the “fly-over state”, Missouri was born 149 years before me. It became the 24th state in the union on August 10th, 1821. Known for its friendly people, landmarks, rivers, lakes, and trails, it’s also called the “Show-Me” and “Cave State”. My Midwestern home has a remarkable history!

Missouri is more than a fly-over state to me. Rolling hills, farms, businesses, cows and other farm animals, church steeples, rivers, and dusty winding roads famously scatter the countryside, small towns, and big cities. Bass Pro made my “big” city famous. My tiny hometown, Clever, was born because of the railroad. It boomed in 1911 to 500 (and only about 100 more when I graduated). Clever has grown approximately 180% since 2000 with a population of over 3,000 now! A metropolis!

Mainly an agricultural state, the mighty Mississippi and Missouri rivers provided hubs for commerce and trade in the early 19th century. Do you know what the Gateway to the West (St. Louis Arch—does the Corps of Discovery expedition and Lewis and Clark jog a memory?), Mark Twain, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Harry S. Truman, Ginger Rogers, Sheryl Crow, and Walt Disney have in common? Each called Missouri home. Did you know Missouri has 93 state parks and 7 National Parks?

My home city, Springfield (also known as the “Queen City of the Ozarks”) sits on the Springfield Plateau which ranges from nearly level to rolling hills (Wikipedia, 2024). With a population close to 172,000, it’s the 3rd largest city in Missouri. The Ozark Mountains, which to many folks aren’t real mountains, is a physiographic region in MO, AR, OK, and the extreme SE corner of Kansas. (Wikipedia). Most of the region falls in Southern MO and Northern AR.

There are numerous rivers to love in my “neck of the woods”. The Buffalo River in AR was our country’s first National River. Roaring River State Park in Cassville, MO holds a special place in my heart. Early years on the Finley; and older ones on the Roaring River with my family made my love for the outdoors SURGE!

“When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrow like sea billows roll,…whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, …It is well, it is well with my soul.” (Horatio Spafford)

As March marches on and spring is about to spring, stay tuned for part II–My Missouri’s Music!

Have faith, my friends. 💚

Family and friends–thank you for your prayers, love, and continued support. You all impact my life in such positive ways. I love you all. ❣️If you’re new to FWF, allow me to introduce myself:

Just call me rural. Born and raised in a small S.W. Missouri town, my roots run deep. Headstrong in completing every goal, I began teaching and motherhood (the best experience in the world) at a young age. The truths learned under steeples, our Creator’s Great Outdoors, traveling and meeting others, curiosity, and being tossed around the River of Life have grown my communion with Christ. Through teaching, learning, living, laughing, and adventures, my body has climbed out of valleys; and ascended and descended mountaintops (physically, spiritually, and emotionally). Having had a taste of the R.V. life for nearly 4 years (and many years of camping), I crave simplicity and long for the roads less traveled (if they lead back to what matters most…family).

In May of 2022, I was diagnosed with a rare cancer called Neuroendocrine. Also known as NET (Neuroendocrine Tumor), the primary mass originated in my pancreas and metastasized to my liver, lymph nodes, ribs, spine, skull, hip, and pelvis. In November of 2023, as a patient of the National Institutes of Health and National Cancer Institute, the bulk of my cancer was removed (along with several organs) from my abdomen.

Cancer will not define me. Friends, none of us are defined by what we do, a disease we may have, and our mistakes or successes. I bet my life on a promise from God. It’s the one truth to which I cling. My joy, despite the diagnosis, only comes from the grace and mercy provided by my Heavenly Father. It’s not about religion. To me, it’s about a relationship with my Creator. Do you know how loved you are?

It was a fast follow-up in Bethesda, Maryland last week. ONLY 16 vials of blood, one C.T., and an M.R.I. were needed on this trip. Have I shared about my amazing surgeon, oncologist, and nurses? Results revealed my left bile duct is dilated. If pain, jaundice, or itchiness occur, I’m to call ASAP. I have one naughty lymph node growing by my aorta and another one staying stable (as most of my bone tumors). Monthly treatments need to continue. With that, glucose levels must be monitored. My bones ache. Particularly my back and neck–but GOD is so good. I’m using the warmth of a heating pad, medicine, and miracles to keep on keeping on. While in Maryland, our Creator SURROUNDED me with the coolest people! A young gal, studying to be a teacher from New York, had only flown 2 times, and prayed for a “nice Christian woman” to sit next to her (Lily, you blessed ME), the taxi driver from Ethiopia shared about God and the miracles in his life the entire drive from Reagan airport to Bethesda, a couple from Utah shared about their 12 years experience at NIH/NCI, another couple from Boston were on their first trip after her diagnosis of an autoimmune disease, I met an amazing woman and artist from Denver, CO named Quana (pronounced like Keanu), who has overcome cancer and lives with debilitating disease, a 30-year-old from Cleveland has an autoimmune disease impacting her teeth and jaw, and young children were wrestling to stay put in strollers as their parents, exhaustingly, tried to console them. I’m a middle-aged woman. I can do this. Seeing children suffer breaks my heart.

I’m a Christ-following, flannel-wearing, blog-writing, nature-craving, dog-loving, coffee-sipping Mom, “Grammy K” old soul, history buff, and curious learner. I’m an Indie Author of a creative non-fiction children’s book (Faith and Finley Tour Missouri 2021). I’ll keep dreaming of open prairies, big mountains, rivers, and the historically stunning places of our amazing world–and stay grounded with faith, family, and friends. My name is Karla. I’m flannel with faith.

  4. Dearest Karla, Your life – not just your posts – is always a inspiration. I never miss a post – but I miss your posts when they are not waiting for me regularly. I too am profoundly aware of God’s amazing, love, grace and call on my life – but sometimes I need reminding. Thank you for being that voice! Thrilled to hear of your travels, encounters and overall awe in this world of ours. You are a bright light in a broken world – well – maybe we aren’t so broken after all.

May God continue to make you smile. Lifting you up to God’s comfort and care for your achy bones and weariness. May you smile as bright as the sun. Give Finley a pat and kiss for me.

    Much love!

    1. Erika, this precious response made my heart and soul shine and smile. Thank you so much, dear friend. 💕It’s humbling to read.
I really believe the one thing that unites us all is suffering. And the one thing we all desire, whether we admit it or not, is love. To be loved, to love, …underneath all of our layers are souls that need sowed by love and grace.

It’s such a beautiful awareness when the God-shaped void is finally filled~and overflows appropriately because that’s the love that completes me!

I think we’re all beautifully messy, imperfect, and magnificently loved!

I love traveling and being aware of humanity~
I guess we don’t have to travel far to make a difference~in our homes, neighborhoods,…yet, it’s good to see the bigger world and know there’s so much we have in common than uncommon.

It means so much to me that you enjoy my writing. I just gave Finn a pat (and a little belly rub). I’m smiling, my friend

      Much love to you!❤️💕🙏🏻

I’m glad to see you writing again. I’m also glad you had a great trip to Maryland even with flight problems. I have to tell you a quick funny story about Trystan. He was riding in the coaches car going to Ball parks of America in Branson last weekend. He’s texting me about seeing things he remembers. Like the WILD WOODY go cart trac. He was beyond happy with memories of us all together. We had a great time laughing together about it. Love always J ❤️🐶

    1. Oh my goodness ~I’m giggling so much! Aw, such precious memories. I was just thinking of her and Riss the other day. Thank you for your support, prayers, and love. And those great memories and giggles. Give them my love and hugs, too. Love you too!❤️🐾 Finn says hello

  6. Wonderful post Karla and update. Makes me wish our family would have spent more than two vacations in Missouri. Your spirit and joy of life and your love for the Lord is beyond inspiring…even this far away.

    1. Aw, my friend. I’ve been wanting to reach out to you for two days. I’m so happy you feel my joy for the Lord. And definitely wish you could have more vacations here. I hold you all in my heart and prayers. Gary, are there signs of spring your way? I appreciate you so much. God bless you!

      1. There were signs of spring, but they went away. It’s nice though…highs in the 20’s through the week, 30’s the following week and a possibility of 40 by April. I have a picture of several flocks and species of waterfowl trying to share the same little strip of melted ice from a spring underneath. Lakes still frozen here.

      2. How wonderfully chilly and magnificent! Perspective is everything! It’s all relative, right? I imagine some wouldn’t call the 20’s “nice”. We will be in the 20’s here this evening. With the sunshine, it’s a good crisp! Knocks away allergy symptoms for me too. I look forward to your pictures, my friend.

  7. Karla you were definitely surrounded by love and all those people that God had placed in your path to and from MD, angels every one! I’m glad to know you arrived home safely and the prayer warriors are still on the job!! I just talked to several on last Friday and today – and the prayers are flowing like the mighty Mississippi!!!

    1. Val, “prayers are flowing like the mighty Mississippi!” Thank you and thank the warriors. The prayers are being heard and answered, my friend. I reflect often on the last two years~the appts, treatments, experiences, the surgery~the amazing support here, like you, and my support group on Wednesdays. When it’s all too much for my brain, my heart takes over. It’s overwhelming~and I don’t want to overrate, overreact, or overdo! But I have only overcome this so far because God has outdone it! It’s the most amazing experience. Unbelievable and surreal~yet, fact and formidable! I love you and appreciate you! Thank you for praying and supporting little ol me on this journey. 🥺💕🙏🏻

  8. glad to hear your voice again, Karla: I love how you say, ‘Jesus puts a kick in your step’; so glad you’re making recovery and thanks for that wonderful travellogue;; a joyous , uplifting post; ah, there’s a house meeting tonight: I will put you on the prayer line ; you are an inspiration 🙂

    1. You’re an inspiration, my friend! Look at you…look at us winning!
Thank you, God, for John’s remission and testimony. You’re a gem, my friend.
Thank you for always praying~and supporting me through all of this! 🙏🏻💛

      1. we’re with you all the way,Karla on your incredible journey with its peaks and valleys 🙂 you never know what’s around that corner —

Karla, Cool info and beautiful writing. After our Grandparents Day prep, I’ll share this info! Thank you & Love You, Sue xoxoxo

    1. Sue, you are so precious! Thank you so much! I can “see” you now prepping for the special day. My mind went to memories! How wonderful of you to share! Thank you, too! I love you 💕

  10. Hey Karla and Finn, great to hear you both kind lady. Also glad to hear the treatments weren’t as much as usual…because of that inner love. Your beating it over the head with your love kind lady, it will heal anything 🤗🤣❤️

And thank you for your share of that beautiful residence of Missouri, it does have so much to wander through, over, around and even on those big ‘M’ fantastic rivers. It does have a lot my friend, I wonder if that was God’s camping spot while He created everything? 🤗🥰🤣

But does it have a football team? 🤣 It has gone so quiet after the Superbowl, I’m itching already and its only March 😂

Glad to hear your voice kind lady, and glad to hear your ok too. Big, big hugs coming your way, along with much love and light while you rest a while. The sunshine is coming your way so absorb that love in His vitamin D as you and Finn start to enjoy the Spring outdoors. Take care my friend 🤗🥰😀❤️🙏

    1. Yay, Mark! You’re baaccck too!
I wish you could see me smiling (and Finn would be, but she’s sleeping on me). I giggled at the “beating it over the head with love” lol and “does it have a football team?” lol 😂 since I highlighted the Chiefs before I didn’t include them~you remember them well, don’t you friend? 🤭🥴 you’re going to have a long itchy season! So,….why not tune in and watch the St. Louis Cardinals? ⚾️ or the KC Royals? 🤭

It’s so good to hear your voice too, Mark. I’ve kept you in my prayers ~are you back “up and running?” You have many cheerleaders!! We’re in your corner and even better, we’re all in God’s corner (and I think Missouri is a great place for a huge camping trip with HIM and my brothers and sisters here). Could you imagine all of us sitting around a big campfire? And of course, for you, there will be S’mores with loads of chocolate! But I’m going to have to watch my chocolate ~I need my liver in tip top shape!
Finn and I send love and hugs. The sun is shining (a bit cool, but spring tomorrow will bring warmer weather). Even better is God’s face shining upon us! And his graciousness to all of us!
Thank you for being such an awesome friend and support to us! 💕🙏🏻🥰🎶🙌🏻💐

      1. Let me see…Chiefs…Chiefs…I think I know that name from somewhere haha 🤣 Ah, next year!…….is there an echo in here? 😂 One day Karla 🤗 And I can always watch the 49’ers ‘winning’ game repeats I suppose…just not the one I want…yet 🤣

I am bopping along kind lady, my sun may be getting a little cooler down here but I do have to share it a bit. It’s not like I get snow in the winter, just a little chill factor of about averaging 12C mid winter. It sneaks up and gets down to zero occasionally so I get serious and turn the heater on 🤣

And I’m over in a flash for the chocolate camping trips kind lady, that I can do even if I have to fly by a few angel friends to get there. I think God can spare me one or two 🤗

Glad to hear the joy in your voice my friend, some days it gets a bit tiring but like all else, it is to give a more profound appreciation when those good bits do come along. May there be many kind lady. And I thank you for your blessings, gratefully received and returned in kind. Thank you. Lots of love and healing coming your way too, pats and belly rubs for Finn, and lots of warmth to cheer you both on. Take care 🤗🥰🤣❤️🙏

      2. Aww, Mark…what beautiful words to put a “spring” in my step–on this first day of Spring!
You always make me giggle and gleeful!
It was in the low 20’s (F) here this morning and I’ll take your 12C any good hiking day! Lol.
Camping, chocolate, good friends…and God as our Guide? We’re winning, Mark!
Lots of love and hugs! Finn says thank you, too!💚❣️🤗💗

Good grief Karla, I need to rest after reading about all you’ve been doing! Lol! I really appreciate the history you shared about Missouri! Sounds like a very nice place to settle down in and enjoy your life. No wonder you and Sweet Miss Finley love it there. How utterly perfect it is that your hometown is called Clever!

Wonderful news that this trip to Maryland was mighty close to “short and sweet”! I’m not surprised at the marvelous people you attract. You are a magnet for kindness, goodness, truth, and love. You are a beacon for anyone who has lost their way, especially if they’re wading through a serious health issue.

Even though this trip was enjoyable…..well except for 3 flight delays, one flight change and a long layover, 😳🥴, I hope you’re allowing yourself ample time to rest and regroup. Besides, Sweet Miss Finley needs some lap time with you!

As always, my prayers are with you that you continue to improve slow and steady and permanently. Healing hugs to you, and hugs and kisses and belly rubs for the sweet fur ball.

    Love, Ginger 🦋

    1. Golly, Ginger.I’ll just start with WE love you and thank you.
Finn was ready for lap time! I was ready for rest time. 🥰
There are challenges~yet, I have no fear. I’ll admit there’s hesitation, lol. Things take more effort, concentration, strength, and …time! I move at my own pace typically ~except this trip I was on the schedule of places, drs, places…Thank you, God, for helping me! I couldn’t do it without HIM!
It’s so amazing how he places such lovely humans and situations around me.

Your words are so touching and inspiring, my friend. I pray I can give hope, love, encouragement, and a smile that might help another soul suffering. If we speak of love and not have it…well…
On the flip side, I observed a lot of looking down, too. Because I’m an observer (not judging~just watching), I notice and am aware. Traveling solo, I MUST always be aware anyway. Cell phones definitely take the attention of many. But for those paying attention~blessings are in abundance; and perhaps, danger can be avoided, too, if paying attention.
I’m trying my best to pay attention and that means staying as active as possible. Even when I’d rather not, Ginger. Yet, I rest when I need. And enjoy recharging and recovering. I don’t share all the icky days, but they happen. I’ll never take the good days and moments for granted! Ever!
It sounds cliche to always say, “I appreciate your prayers!” Yet, I MEAN every word. I’d like to tell everyone to forget about praying now~it’s been two years and you can all stop now. It’s a miracle.
Miracles, Ginger. I live in awe and gratitude. The healing hugs comfort my achy bones and tired body. The prayers propel me. Your love and support lift me!
I pray you stay healthy and happy, sweet friend. 💚💐💕🙏🏻

    1. Kate, I appreciate you so much. Each time I see your name, my mind and heart go back to the beginning of my blog~and how you’ve helped me grow in so many ways. “Our experience of life is determined by our filters and yours are beautiful.” How wonderful. Thank you, dear friend. I feel that same way about yours. 💕🙏🏻🥰🤗

    1. My dear dear friend, you mean SO Much to me! Everyone, meet Judy! 🙂
You always stand beside me, pray, laugh, cry (:-), and even DRIVE me. Your support and friendship over these years have encouraged me to keep sharing my faith.
I miss being closer to you; yet, I know you’re a call away and you’re always praying and supporting my family and me. We are all so grateful for you and your family. Without my family, you, Judy, Rita, and my sister, Kim, life would be a lot harder for me.
I pray my words will be of comfort–and hope that my physical body will continue to give back to all who have given to me.
I love you so much! Thank you! ❣️💚🙏💗

  13. I am glad to good folks of Bethesda worked their best ways to fill your visit with what you need, my friend Karla. Yes, keep striding! In the years I lived in Maryland during my now Waaaaayback, I caught fancy to a fantastic band by the name of The Nighthawks, whose wonderful blues music took on the label of Bethesda Boogie. When called, boogie on down to meet those people who help you so much.

    1. Mark, this is awesome, my friend! Your words made my toes tap. You know I love music! Were you a reporter/writer WAYYYY back then, too, Mark? tee hee
The Nighthawks–Bethesda Boogie–definitely something I need to learn! I’ll keep on boogieing to Bethesda as needed (even if my boogie is a bit bogged down at times, lol).
I appreciate you, my friend. You’re such a great support and cheerleader! I’ll be by your place to check out some cool pics and thoughts–you’re living life to the fullest!

      1. In fact, Karla, Maryland is where I finalized my journalism learning, at the big university in College Park, and carried on with my professional newspaper career upon graduation. So as a grateful Terrapin alum, I forever carry warm thoughts for the state of Maryland!

      2. That’s fabulous, Mark!! I’ll remember that when I visit! Just the tiny part of Maryland I visited has been very impressive ~the people and places~just amazing.
What a career you crushed, my friend!

  14. Karla, isn’t it amazing how God places people in our path to encourage us? Your story is filled with God’s amazing grace. You truly walk by faith and that inspires me, sweet friend. Thank you for sharing facts about your state that I was unaware of. I have visited Missouri as a teen, remind me to tell you that story. I have passed through a few times also. It sounds like your home town has exploded with growth. I look forward to the next installment, dear one!

I have prayed for you in the early morning hours of spring’s arrival. I love you sweet friend, it is well with my soul 🙏🏻💚🙌🏻🩷💐

    1. Pam, you’re so precious. Waking up and visiting your place, the settings, the Appalachians, the words…they all encourage me just as you say I’m that to you. It’s a beautiful partnership and inspiring connection!
When I was a little girl I knew everyone in my home town. Basically, most of us were probably kinfolk, too. 🙂 Now, that’s not the case. Christian County has exploded since I was born. Branson has changed a lot too during my time.
I can’t wait to hear your story!
I pray for you, Butch, your Daddy, and sweet family as you do for mine.
I love you! Yes, “IT is WELL” Amen! 💚🙏❣️

  15. If I ever get to Missouri, I’d head straight to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis to see Franz Marc’s painting, Large Blue Horses. It was one of the five that inspired Eric Carle’s art. I love this post, and love small towns.

    1. Jennie, it seems I could get to that place in less than 9 hours. I’ll meet you North and we can go from there? 🙂 Anything that inspires you and inspired Eric Carle, would undoubtedly, inspire me! And the car ride alone would be a treasure! I would learn so much from you! Thank you for supporting me. I’m so happy you enjoyed this! I hope and pray you, your family, and the precious students are all well!! ❣️🙏💚🤗

      1. Well, you just melted my heart, or maybe filled it. If the good Lord shows me a way to get to Missouri, we’re on! I will have so much to say on that dream car ride. You’ll just have to hold me up when I see that painting.❤️

  16. Hi Karla! I enjoyed this post so much. I lived in St. Louis from between the ages of 2 and 8. My sister lives in Springfield, so I visit her there once or twice a year. I used to go fishing with my dad at Lake Taneycomo. Even though I live in Kentucky, I have visited Missouri my whole life. It is truly a beautiful state!

I pray you are well. Henry and I send our love. I keep you in my prayers, dear friend. 🐾🤗💕

    1. Cindy, I knew you had spent time (and had family) in Missouri. If/when you have the opportunity on a Springfield visit, Finley and I would love to host a visit for you and Henry! It would be OUR blessing and delight! Thank you for praying for me and inspiring me. Your walk is an encouragement!! I’m so thrilled you enjoyed this piece on our great state! I miss living closer to the lake, but am where God needs me right now. I’m content by staying in his Will. If I’m able to move out and about, then I can enjoy the sites and come back to rest. That’s a blessing!
Please give Henry belly rubs and cuddles from Finn and me. We love you! ❣️🙏🐾

  17. Hi, my friend! I was wondering about your trip to Maryland. It sounds like God sandwiched some disappointing news between quite a bit of heartening stuff! He is good! I continue to pray for you- your strength, your joy, and your many opportunities to talk about Jesus! 💚

    1. Sweet friend, thank you for this kind and thoughtful message! I do love how God delivers messages wrapped in hope and love! I was thinking of you yesterday and hoping to get to see you. I hate that I missed your February love notes, so I must get back to see them and new things, too! I pray for you as you do for me. Amid busyness, doing life “different” and with more effort than before, I’m still in AWE at HIS power and grace and how he connects all of us together–and strengthens us through this bond! I just thought of “Wonder Twins” from my days of cartoons! We’re not the Justice League (that’s HIS department, lol), but I do feel through you and friends here, that I’m gaining more Earthly strength as I give up control to HIM to take care of HIS things. I hope you are finding strength, joy, and good health. I pray you all are. I know that life hands us all unavoidable situations–I don’t know how to do life without HIM! Much love, sweet Mama. Thank you for lifting me.

  18. Information about Missouri was fascinating. I know so little about it. But the tale of your journey was fascinating and inspiring. It is what you do.

    1. Pam, thank you for your thoughtful and kind support and words! “It is what you do.” Gulp. I have goosebumps and a lump in my throat. That was so precious to say. You are such a supportive friend and treasure!

  19. Awwww… this post made me homesick. I want to go back TODAY! Even though I was born and (mostly) raised in Ohio, my 45 years in the KC area gave me a deep affection for this land between the rivers. I think people overlook Missouri because it isn’t flashy. Although there are beautiful spots, there are no giant mountains. No ocean. No glitz and glamor. When you live in Missouri, you have to find the beauty in the people all around you. It takes a little more work, but it is sure worth it. Thanks for this great trip “home,” Karla.

    1. Russell, I was hoping you’d stop back by in Missouri!! I KNEW you’d be here to root us on! THANK YOU!
Missouri misses you, too! Please come back and see us (hint hint–SW part, please!).
“I think people overlook Missouri because it isn’t flashy.”
“When you live in Missouri, you have to find the beauty in the people all around you. It takes a little more work…”
Wow, Russell! You know! You lived here a LONG time ago.
I’ve been fortunate to visit many different areas. There are so many more places I’d like to see. There are places, at one time, I thought I’d rather live. A constant 70-degree temp would be nice, lol (am I high maintenance?). But I love experiencing all 4 seasons–If I had to choose, there would be 3 months I’d like to leave here and go elsewhere. Yet, there’s nothing like coming “home” when it’s all said and done. Our forever home will be even more spectacular than any place offered here, won’t it?
As long as I can get to trails, and rivers, see some history,…oh, yes, and be around GREAT PEOPLE, I’m thrilled. Even more–to plant myself where God tells me.
Missouri has been my life so I’ll keep focusing on the good!
I have dear friends, including you, in your state that I love so much!
Thank you for being here, supporting and praying for me, and encouraging me (for several years now)! Many blessings to you both!

  20. Small town charm that you exude so beautifully, Karla. Lovely to learn more about your state and hometown. I’ve taught in several high schools nearly as populated are your town! Having a father who loved to fish for bass, I am quite familiar with Bass Pro. 😊🎣 Wish the best for you and sending you lots of love and hugs, inspiring woman and writer. 🤗💖🌸 Will you be seeing this year’s mass emergence of cicada in your area?

    1. Michele, you warm my heart and soul! I had a feeling you’d be familiar with the Great Outdoors and I knew schools!

Did you know Table Rock Lake (SW MO/NW AR) is rated one of the Top 100 Bass Lakes in the U.S.? It’s a man-made lake well-known in the Branson area for great fishing and recreation.
{The photo of Finn and me is at the shore on one of my favorite trails to the Marina.)

My curiosity rose–I went to the Conservation website to check out the cicada possibilities–according to them: “Only four broods of periodical cicadas extend into parts of Missouri: two of the 13-year type and two of the 17-year type. It seems Brood 19, the largest MO brood is returning once again. Now I hope they get here or I’ll be “brooding”, tee hee.
Further research states they will emerge in May and remain above ground through June. Michele! Each night I say, “Alexa, play nighttime sounds” (If I’m not asking her for other things like gospel, meditations, white, brown, pink, or other sleep noises, rain, or a million “Why’s”, tee hee—oh, the problems of a curious mind). Cicadas it is! And crickets! I REALLY MISS CAMPING and can’t wait!

Your words are always so sweet, kind, and full of love! Thank you, sweet friend. I’m sending love and hugs, always. ❣️💖🤗

      1. I did not know that, thank you for sharing, Karla. My dad would have loved that! I did not enjoy fishing as a kid but I sure would love another chance to fish with my dad. Thanks so much too for the additional info. Sure would love to get a glimpse of this rare cicada emergence. I appreciate and adore you and the kind connection we share. Love and hugs, sweet and precious friend. 🙏🏻💖🤗

      2. It’s my blessing, sweet Michele.
I wish you have that fishing time again too. I’m sorry.🙏🏻❤️
I do hope we hear the cicadas together! I adore and love you. 🙏🏻💕🤗🎶⭐️🎶💐

  21. I do think that one of the (very) few upsides of battling health issues is the amazing people you meet on your journey! The health care professionals, the others you chat with in waiting rooms, etc., are a gift and they make copying so very much easier. God does work in those ways, doesn’t he? You’re always in my prayers, Karla!

    1. Ann, that is so true! Thank you for sharing your wise and thoughtful words. I tend to look at things positively and count all the blessings; I’m with you on the upsides.
I was thinking of your Mom’s situation and all you’ve been through. God truly does work in such amazing ways. I try not to live in fear, or in feelings–but in truth, I know–and just “go”. When I feel hesitant I empty MY soul space and let HIM feel me with faith. He expects me to use good judgment, common sense, and wisdom too. lol, I’m a work in progress!
My situation is nothing compared to what some face; I feel blessed to be here and meet the wonderful angels here on Earth!
Your prayers are so appreciated, Ann. I will pray for you and your family right now.

  22. Dear Karla,

I might’ve mentioned before how Missouri showed me a thing or two about God’s love and the great outdoors. As a teenager, I spent a couple of summers at Kanakuk, hiking, water skiing, slithering through caves. I brought Philippians 4:13 home with me from Kamp and send it back to you today.

Thank you for sharing your joy and testimony and that your soul is well (a favorite hymn), despite your naughty lymph node and your aching bones. I’m praying for those things and your glucose levels, low reserves, and continued monthly treatments. You are a walking miracle, Karla. Miracles attract more miracles. Look at all the angels strategically placed along your path. I love that.

And I love you much, Beautiful Sister-Friend! 💚💖💙

  23. Hello sister Karla! Oh it is good to read your words and feel your energy rising from the page. It sounds like you have been basking in God’s love, finding the right people when you need them, and your body is responding to the treatment. I’ve watched your relationship with God transform with this illness and as you move through the treatments I see you moving into a deeper, amazingly trusting, almost effortless relationship with God. It’s inspiring. I’m in awe of you. I’ve never seen anyone walk with such confidence, peace, and joy as you. Such incredible faith. Love you to the moon and back, and back again. Sending prayers, healing wishes, and love your way. Hugs, C

    1. Oh, C~this is so humbling and heartwarming. 🥹❤️
I’m so happy you SEE the transformation.💕
For many years when I struggled with not understanding life situations, I always had faith. Yet, I allowed soul space to be occupied by things that were …well, cancerous? 🙏🏻

When you hit rock bottom, have a death sentence, or a good thing~you give up all that is not pleasing to him or in HIS will for your life, you actually gain freedom that’s only found in communion with Christ. I don’t have to worry, C.

I can praise him when I want, worship him, cry, laugh, sing,…I had no idea what it was like to be 100% HIS! And only HIS. It changes everything.

I accepted him as a little girl~religion was not a good thing~but the relationship with Jesus changed my life! Even in sickness, I can praise him and consider it a blessing because he’s worked miracles in me that can’t be credited to anyone or anything else.
I wake up with him, walk, talk, cry, and even …I’m held. You are too!! He loves you so much! WE are so loved!
I’m in awe of him! I give him all the glory. I’m so thankful for the endurance, patience, courage, and patience he’s gifted me with. It’s been many years in the making, C. Many. I pray for his wisdom and hope that I can keep showing HIS love and goodness.
I’m giddy you can feel it! And even happier we have this connection. I love you to the moon and back and infinity and beyond. 🤭💕🥰❤️ I pray and want to encourage you as you do me too, C. Many hugs 🤗🥰

  24. I remember many years ago sitting a geography exam and we had to read a map covering Missouri. Apparently I did really well apart from I kept spelling Missouri and Mississippi wrong, so lost marks for that. I loved your mini guide, I do really like the sound of this part of our beautiful planet. More hugs on this path you are walking with Christ. I hope you know how every time I read your words, my faith gets such a super charge. ❤️❤️

    1. My friend, this warmed my heart. I’m smiling and thanking God for you. I giggled at the spelling part (there’s a saying I learned on spelling Mississippi). Lost marks! Oh my! I remember the days when spelling counted ;). Depending on where one lives, Missouri might be pronounced with a long e at the end or “uh” lol. I’ve also heard people pronounce it “Misery”. Lol ~it’s amazing to me it was covered on your geography exam. That just made me feel closer to you! Yay! I cherish our connection 💕🙏🏻

  25. Yes, I know I am loved. It’s hard to believe it sometimes, but I’m getting there one reminder at a time. Thank you, even in the midst of all your challenges, for reminding me once again, dear Karla.

    1. I’m SO HAPPY you know how loved you are! And it means so much you took the time, in your VERY busy life, to stop by and read little ol’ me. You’re so dear to me, Mitch. Many blessings!

  26. Continued prayers for your health! You are a warrior in so my ways. He has given you incredible strength. I have never been to Missouri. I would love to visit all of the beautiful places you’ve mentioned. Being there sounds like coming home. 💜

    1. Hello, Rachel! Thank you so much for stopping by and for the precious and kind comments. My heart is full! Knowing your spirit and life, it would be like home to you. Bless you, sweet friend.❣️💚🙏

  27. Hello my friend. I haven’t been on here in a while but plan to be more diligent with my blogging. Of course, the first thing I did was pop over to your page to catch up. You have no idea how much you are in my thoughts and prayers. I’m continuing to pray for you, my friend. Feeling good as I type this to you, I’m listening to a beautiful Holy week chant. Receive this message with a pleasing fragrance. Know that I am with you from afar. xx Lisa

    1. Lisa, I’m so happy to see you, dear friend. I’m so proud of your new venture and business! And can imagine how busy you are with that and family, too! How kind of you to be here and encourage me. YOU propelled me in so many ways and continue to “bolster” me even when you don’t know it (i.e.–just TODAY fifty more of my books arrived so I can set up my booth at our Local Author’s Expo in April–you were on my mind when I opened them!). I’m so happy you’re feeling good. It’s a rainy start to the Holy Week–and it’s not putting a damper on my spirits–my body isn’t cooperating–but my heart is (and it will keep me here longer than anything I believe). I do receive your precious message and fragrance of faith and friendship. May God continue to bless you and your family, Much Love, Lisa. ❣️🤗🙏

  28. I love your enthusiasm for Missouri, Karla! No doubt it’s that positive exuberance within you helping you through your cancer battle. You are an inspiration!

    1. Thank you, Nancy! When I was a little girl I learned what was “required” about my state. In all the years of dreaming of other places, there are MANY places I wish to visit here in the U.S. and in my own home state! Your stating that I’m an inspiration is humbling. Knowing what I know of you, I think you’d be just like me. Thank you for sharing that. Many blessings, Nancy. ❣️🙏

  29. Karla, I appreciate your sharing of so many Missouri treasures . . . landscape and famous people . . .. from small towns to big cities. Indeed, this is your awesome home with countless memories. Always keeping you in thoughts and prayers. With your every word, I feel you surrounded with God’s peace.

    1. That means so much, Richard. God bless you. I feel HIS peace. The last two sermons I’ve attended have been on peace and “HIS PROMISES” (today being to not worry!). I’m so thrilled you enjoyed this Missouri post! Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts and prayers. I’m doing the same, my friend.

  30. Karla…where do I start with this post?!?! First – your book is one of my favorite to share with the “littles” all the way up to lastly…I love you. And I love how gracefully you “keep on keeping on” – of course in full-fledged flannel! Hugs to you my courageous sister-in-Christ!

    1. Dawn! My friend and sister! You are so thoughtful and generous! You read it to the littlest?!?! My little bitty book…oh my heart ❤️. It just grew 3 sizes!

I love you! Thank you for being YOU (as I sit in my flannel on this rainy MO day). ♥️🙏🏻

  31. Thank you for once again sharing all the bits of your story. The beautiful, the difficult, the painful, and the grateful. I get a ‘kick’ in my step towards Jesus whenever I encounter your deep faith in Him! Every person’s story is beautiful to acknowledge, and when God is at the centre we see how that amplifies the joy we experience and the grace we can offer others and ourselves.

Bless you, in all the parts of life, and I pray this week is another one where you see His light in the sunshine, reflections from mirrors, and the joyous smiles of family and furry friends. God’s peace go with you! 🙏❤️🎶

    1. Hamish, your words always touch my heart and soul! THANK YOU, dear friend! It’s always good to see you and read your encouraging words.
I’m so happy my story resonates with you. I’m more happy that my faith can be felt–and I feel your faith and see it in action, too! He does amplify the joy (love that, Hamish!). Even on the days it’s hard–I know where my supply source remains!

Bless you and yours, my friend. We never know what a day/hour/minute might hold–but we know WHO holds it! I pray you see and feel his light, too.

This response encouraged me at a much-needed time, my friend. THANK YOU.

      God’s peace with you! ❣️💛💕🙏

      1. I love these words of yours, “We never know what a day/hour/minute might hold–but we know WHO holds it!” Such a beautiful thing to be reminded of and to know. 🧡🙏

Feel free to contribute! Your faithful feedback is appreciated!
