“It is Well”

"When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul."

The writer of this poem, Horatio Spafford, suffered incredible losses. Four daughters perished in a sunken ship; his wife survived. When joining her, he wrote four verses after the ship passed the spot where his daughters died (ages 12, 7, 4, and 18 months). It was 1873 and 3 years later, Phillip Bliss made it music. Three more children were born in later years; one died. It was then that Horatio decided (after years of personal and financial disasters) to depart from “worldly” success to pursue one thing-a deep spiritual relationship with his creator. Hosting prayer meetings in his home, Horatio engaged in philanthropic work despite others’ religious affiliations. Four days before his 60th birthday, Horatio died of malaria (1888). This song will forever be my favorite.

Since I last wrote much has happened. I’ve completed two radiation treatments (external for bones and the first internal one). A trip to the E.R. was made after waking up in excruciating pain one day. I have new medicine. It is well with my soul.

My sons and their families have made their moves. They are all within a day’s drive. We’re all in the same time zone! It is well with my soul.

Some days my stomach can’t handle food and I still find ways to give myself nutrition. It is well with my soul.

There are days when I wake up in tears. But then I think of all my blessings and the wonderful family, friends, and faith I have. My tears turn to joy. It is well with my soul.

The T.V. shares devastating news and ads for things I really don’t need, and watch how the world wants us to conform to the “latest and greatest”. I smile because I don’t need it. It is well with my soul.

The doctor’s office is filled with others who are suffering and receiving treatments. I SEE THEM. My heart is with them. It is well with my soul.

Cars are passing me and drivers are texting. My family and friends travel these same roads with distracted people. It is well with my soul.

Lines are drawn by politics, race, gender, and values. It is well with my soul.

Up the road a child may be hungry, a neighbor needs a hello, and my yard needs tending. Let’s do something. It is well with my soul.

“And Lord haste the day, when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.”

Have you heard of NET yet?

Saturday night was mind-boggling (spirit-boggling?). That morning I woke up WITHOUT pain. Prayers paralyzed it I know. A benefit was held for me by my community and organized by a dear group of friends. The vast amount of love gathered in this place completely shattered any “shouldn’t’s” I had. Friends and family reminded me to receive. Have you ever had your breath taken away? Has something POSITIVE been so staggering that it takes you days to digest? My writing projects are “thank you’s” to each family and friend that has stunned me with their staggering well-wishes, donations, time, prayers, and support. The line of love lifted my spirit and gave me strength. The family members that could not make it were with us in spirit. Those friends who sent me well wishes and blessings from other places were felt. It was completely surreal. When asked if I might sing about a month or so ago I was unsure. The power provided was providential (not luck, but divine). The lights were bright and I couldn’t see the audience. The spirit moved and the words came to me as if I was sitting in a small church listening to my grandma and others sing harmony around me. I thought of each grandparent and family member, walking in the woods, standing on the highest mountain, and a group hug with my Savior, my kids, and my grandkids. Aren’t group hugs the best?

Yes, there are a lot of thank you’s to write. As a matter of fact, I want to spend the rest of my life just saying “thank you”. Thank you to my kids and grandkids, my parents, my family, and my friends,…thank you, God, for loving us and giving grace. Whether I have a day (you and I are not promised today), a month, or YEARS,…I know how it ends. It is well with my soul.

Thank you Larry, Justin, and Lori Sifford for allowing me the opportunity to make music with you. A special thank you to the Comedy Jamboree for the wonderful laughs, too.

Have faith 💚

  1. Hey you,
I have been on the watch for a post from you. I can’t imagine all you’re enduring, and yet you still write with your heart aiming at God. I recently shared my now experience with BII. Breast Implant Illness. I was going to be having my implants out, and I am going flat as my implants are flipping, and causing major havoc in my body then we got Covid.
Covid was beyond horrible, and it pushed my surgery date out. I finally got my call yesterday of November 18. I’m going flat, and I will not have breasts. It is a lot to take in, and process. Then I read your post, and it is nothing compared to what you are enduring. I do wake in tears some mornings, as I know these implants need to be removed. This will be my 5th surgery in 2 plus years. I’m tried. I know God has me though. I find myself thinking of you, and your current situation in this life. You carry yourself with such grace. Keep on keeping on my dear friend. I long to see how God has you! You’re being used for the higher Kingdom! Thank you for your share, and many many prayers!
Blessings of love, and may you find yourself swaddled with Him at the cross!

    1. Lisa,I’m so sorry for what you have faced and will be facing. Do you know that you have been an inspiration? We never have to look far to see someone struggling more. But please remember what YOU are facing IS huge to you. Wouldn’t it be lovely if the whole world could look upon one another with a heart of understanding and sympathy? God has and is still using you, Lisa! He never promised us an easy life. As a matter of fact, an easy life would not have allowed me to truly feel his love. YOU never take his love for granted and he knows that. Think of what all you’ve been through and his he has used your tests as your testimony. I will be adding you to my calendar on the 18th for prayer. Sister, you’re “flat filled with faith” and that’s the best flat there is. I feel your prayers and love and that’s how I keep going from everyone around me. For anyone reading this, please pray for dear Lisa! Love and blessings. 💛🙏🏻🤗 thank you for your kind words.

      1. I am always amazed at how God uses people (you) in my life. As I am supposed to be up getting ready for my day, tears now stream my face! Thank you so much for the kind, and loving words of encouragement. It has been rough, and I know I wasn’t promised an easy life. An easy life I have not had, I have had a life filled with one miracle after the next though. I will be lifting you up in prayer as your body endures this difficult journey. All I know is when the world is a distraction I know God has a retirement plan for me that is out of this world. So I don’t get all wound up in the right wing/left wing political darkness or the goofiness of all the little irritants that come way day after day. I just know my redemption draws nigh. Praise God this is just a temporary stopping ground, yet I have to do best with everything God gives to me today. I can only pray when others look in my eyes they see Jesus! Thank you again, now I must go make my bed. I must drink one more cup of coffee, and get a start on this glorious God given gift of yet another day! For today is all I have, now is all I have been promised. This moment! I have to grab it with all my might in Him. God bless you sweet sister in Christ! 🤗☀️🤗

  2. Karla, thank you for the update. I rejoice with you in God’s provision of grace via the pain-free morning. His grace flows through you in song. I see you imitating the teachings of Christ, making Him the focal point of life, always pointing others to the foot of the cross.

Dear Sovereign Lord, may your mercies carry Karla through each difficult moment. Surround her with a mighty army in the spiritual realms. You are the God who uses what the enemy intends for evil and turns it into good. Father, may the fruit of this blog and Karla’s life multiply one hundredfold for Your Kingdom. In the strong name of Jesus. Amen.

    1. Pam,…I thought of you when I began writing this hymn. I knew it would be your favorite. I just knew. I’m feeling so loved and my prayer is that everyone feels that same love; and accepts it. I’m being so taken care that it actually makes me tear up. Pam, please tell Butch how I appreciate you both so much. We can sing it together although we are states apart. I love you and hold a place in my heart. 💕🙏🏻💛

    Oh dear Karla,

    Just beautiful!

I love this song. My dad taught it to us growing up and hearing you sing it, just brought tears to my eyes.

You’re right, we are not promised tomorrow, yet we can rest in His promises.

I’m so glad the benefit went well and I am SO happy that you had a chance to sit down and write. Praise God!!!

Praying for you. Will never stop.

My family and I spent many years gathered around a piano singing together. There’s nothing like it. Thank you for your love and prayers. Know I love you and keep you all in my heart too. 💛❤️🙏🏻💕🥰🤗

Thank you for this update as I often think of you and wonder how you are. Take care, receive the love that others are sending and continue to listen to your soul. ❤️

    1. Kate, your words touch my heart. Thank you. 💛Never would I have thought that I could be described as such. When I was a little girl I wanted nothing but to see people happy. I couldn’t understand travesty; but I understood compassion. But I don’t think I really ever knew love. I felt in my heart. I know now it’s God and only God. And it’s because of that strength I can keep going, even when I don’t feel like it. There are days that are much harder. But as you said, I receive the love and use it for healing. I’m truly listening. Realistically, I doubt I’ll make it to Australia. But I don’t have a doubt I’ll meet you in the most stunning place in the future. Love and peace. 💕

Oh! Karla, it is so wonderful to see a post from you! This is a tough journey you’re on, but your pure faith has brought you this far, it will continue to carry you through. Plus all your medical caregivers, loving family and friends, your readers and your community. Best of all you have Finley to love and comfort you.

Ya know, if you get enough radiation, you may light up like a Christmas tree in time for the holidays! Just sayin….. Faith is much more powerful if you can find humor in the hard things life throws at us.

I’m glad “it is well” with you. You keep on singing dear friend. Remember I told you, I have my foot in the Fat Lady’s mouth, so we won’t be hearing from her!

All my good wishes and prayers coming your way. Ginger

    1. Ginger,…you make me laugh out loud ~even in tears of sweetness from your words. I need to upload another video of the Comedy Jamboree from Branson that had us all laughing the night of the benefit and you’ll really understand how the “light up like a Christmas tree” broke my funny bone (a joke about a cat that ate some Christmas lights). It just feels so GOOD to be with my WP family again and to share about all the love and support that is physically surrounding me here in my little place on this planet. Finn says hello and she is currently sacked out in her itty bitty flannel hoodie. She’s a good girl and a comfort for sure. Love you, Ginger! 🐾🐶❤️

    1. It’s so good to “see” you my friend. I’m filled with gratitude over your words and thoughts. To think this is your favorite affirms the attitude I had this morning about immediately getting to my computer. I woke up singing that song. In the last years I’ve learned to replace thoughts in my head with songs. If something negative tries to take over, it’s music that rebounds and relays. It took years of practicing “living in the present” and shutting off my mind (although I love research and knowing how things work, lol). I truly felt the Spirit singing through me and knew I had support around me. When we allow our “child like” faith to step in I believe miracles can happen. It’s true as believers that are ultimate healing will be the minute we enter heaven; but I believe we can make heaven on Earth if we could be broken down to REALLY believe it! I feel your prayers and please keep sending resilience! Sending hugs and prayers to you and yours, Scott! 💛💕🙏🏻

  9. Hey Karla, there must be a little bit of love in that big community of yours. So many hearts around you pouring out their empathy, compassion and love to someone who has shared hers forever. You are indeed part of that love, a community of souls around you close and many way out here. But that love can reach far, just as God’s does wherever your heart is, so is He. A huge hug from down under dear lady, I was starting to get itchy from the quiet but your love raised itself so we could hear you. Thank you for that, and yes your faith is built from something wonderful and returned in kind. Keep your faith going my friend…it is well with your soul 😀❤️🙏🏽

      1. Most certainly dear lady, I have lots over here so freely given and I sneak in a bit of Spiritual healing too. Between that, radiation, beautiful Dr’s and a community of love…your singing well. In fact I didn’t play your little stage performance till after I wrote the first comment. Your challenging the bird life with notes like that. Well done Karla, after all you’ve been through I’d be squawking like a buzzard 🤣
Take care dear lady, lots of love and light coming at you 😀❤️🙏🏽

      2. Oh, Mark! You have a way with words. I laughed out loud at your “squawking”! Such a sweet comment about “challenging the birds”. It’s all God my friend! On another “note” 🎶🤪,…it’s truly my stomach and abdomen taking the blunt of treatments. I feel much weaker than I ever have-yet, I muster up strength as needed when I take care of my daily responsibilities. I try very hard not to think too far down the road and just live, and sing, in each moment. There are days “squawking” might commence. But I’ll capture singing with the angels and birds each chance I get! 💛💕❤️🎶🎶🎶🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

      3. The words of a loving soldier Karla. We face these things and they show us…us. And we can be nothing more than the love that it shows us. I’ve done many things in my life and it can take many repeats to understand. But when we are coming stronger into that awakening, when we face these moments on our path, it gives such a powerful understanding that what we do is in fact resting back into His love. Yes, we are still human but it seems from all we have done before, is now holding us in such a stead to be able to lovingly believe in hope and faith and the trust of love that we are going into His arms. And on that ‘note’ dear lady, I shall focus much love and energy on your stomach and abdomen so that at the least a lovely, small piece of chocolate will bring a smile beyond what was, into what will be 😀❤️🙏🏽
