Is chronic incurable?
Will it ever end?
Those feelings of joy that long-stand in the heart,
The next day the pain that tries to rip it apart.
It’s persistent and difficult and some just don’t know,
that words, thoughts, and attitudes make the healing so slow.
The focus you have and what you seek to find,
might fog your soul and take over your mind.
Is it lovely and pure and tainted with trust?
Is it fighting each day with what seems unjust?
There are good days and bad days,
The right ways and wrong ways.
Constant comparison is acute and grave,
To overcome it, alone, makes one brave.
Smiles on the outside are still very real,
The peace on the inside tries to conceal.
It’s tough and it’s tiring trying to fight,
Symptoms that hit you with all their might.
Chronic perfection is sought through scrolling our thumbs,
Chronic indifference lingers with words off our tongues.
If you’re battling an illness stay far from the crowd,
that don’t understand hurt; only loud and proud.
To feel healthy and loved is a marvelous gift,
Fasten your faith and try not to drift.
Grapple your grit when the pain arrives
Give thanks to the Lord for being alive.
If you feel it is getting the best of you,
Know that you’re loved…HE’LL carry you through.🤍
Beautifully said K.L. Serendipitous too: I saw your post just after reading James 1 :2-4 — “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
Wow. I was just reading something somewhat a long these lines by Richard Rohr today. About how we should see individual / personal sin as pain and opportunity, not in the same way we see corporate sin or national, religious brokenness. And as you say here, it all comes back to Love and God’s Universal Cosmic, all -inclusive, all healing Love. Great post. Much to think on. Love the verbs — grapple, grasp, hold on…. active faith but accepting faith. Thank you. Shalom, Jane
Thank you, Jane. I appreciate the wisdom and enlightenment that Rohr reveals in his teachings. It’s the painful things that awaken us to deep beauty. In this “half” of life it’s the realization of that beauty. That which we couldn’t see in our first half. Active and accepting~yes! Thank you for your thoughtful and wise words. Peace and blessings to you, Jane. ~Karla
That is very beautiful dear lady, a verse from the heart and just the thing after a difficult night, thank you. The power of words that are built by love is a magic indeed, your books will keep the reader enthralled just by that alone 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋
A very lovely poem! Much truth – love is the cure for all chronic conditions of the heart and soul. And if there is enough Love manifested it can cure societal ills as well…
I also like Richard Rohr. I wrote this week about a reading of his. He says we have to face the things we are given and be pushed out beyond our level of comfort. That way we grow. I know I have stated badly but is really struck me.
I don’t know if you are aware that my husband died in March but he was quite ill and wouldn’t have wanted to continue without being able to do things. I’m doing ok. Just learning how to move on each day. That’s why the Rohr thought really spoke to me.
No, I was not aware. I’m so sorry for your loss. I knew you were right beside him through the battles. My prayers and thoughts are with you. I’m glad to know you’re doing ok. Again, I’m sorry. I’m glad you have a network to lean on. 🙏🏻❤️
You amaze me. Through pain, you DO persevere, and it has even proven for your sweet, pure faith to shine even more. It inspires and encourages me every day, as well as all your faithful followers. I love you more than words can say. Kriddy❤👭
What a precious thing to say. You inspire and encourage me. Your words and heart mean the world to me. I love you more than life. We make a whole. 💛❤️💚👭
This touches me in ways that there are no words for. This morning while puppy & i were doing are 5:30 a.m. walk in the peaceful dark coolness of early morning the thoughts you so eloquently & lovingly put to verse were racing through my head. Thanks so much for the ability you have to bring tears to my eyes & peace to my soul dear friend 💞💝💖
What a humbling and beautiful reaction my friend. The feeling that my words are relatable and peaceful is exactly what I hope when they pour out of me. May peace and love always light your path my friend. 💛❤️🙏🏻
Pain is incomprehensible except as a theory to someone who hasn’t felt deep in their soul/body the reality that pleasure and pain really DON’T coexist. I learned that when my left hip went south and my doc was no help. But…what you learn through it? Perseverance and faith. Yep. ❤
Thank you so much. I’m glad you found it helpful. Because I do battle things others can’t see {don’t we all?} the morning I wrote this it took about 10 minutes to put down the words. And then I know it was truly God-inspired to help others too. Not just in the Chronic physical issues, but all the chronic issues with our world. The morning headlines seem unreal. Because you’re a rabbit patch gal you’ll understand my need to quickly flip to Little House, The Waltons, Andy Griffith…or the best, music. To look over nature, especially mountains and rivers, is pure bliss. So I create my own bliss in my home. Just as you do at the rabbit patch. May God give you peace, health, and happiness my friend. I hope all of your family is doing well. 💛❤️💚🙏🏻
Inspiring! These words bring a gentle reminder of perseverance’s role in so many lives. This poem humanizes the issue of chronic pain of any kind so that we all understand how it can weigh our loved ones down.
Thank you! I’m so glad it can inspire and encourage others. In our own individual ways we experience some form of chronic. I’m so glad for the power of God in battles. I may come out with scars but he keeps me on the winning side if I let him.
Even in the midst of pain we are reminded “The kingdom of God is within us” and with that thought there is a whole world we can take comfort in knowing God is in the center of it. Although we grow weary in this life the day will come when this temporary life will end and there will be no more pain for all eternity. Therein lies the hope of another day.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (Philippians 4:8). Blessings.
Julia
Julia, your words and encouragement are precious. For the suffering cannot compare to what awaits us. There’s comfort. And I find it in the little things as well as the big things. Hope is a beautiful thing.
Sometimes in life struggles show themselves, and it is difficult to know which are ours battles to fight, and which are not. Ask God, and He will guide. It will not make the struggles easier to face, but we will have what need to overcome them.
Thank you for this beautiful poem, and the encouragement behind it. ♥
Hamish, it’s so good to see/read you. I appreciate your words and wisdom ~”which are our battles to fight, and which are not.” I’m so glad you found this encouraging. Thank you for your encouragement too! 🙏🏻💚
That is a great quote. God never gives us more than we can handle. Sometimes it does seem that way. Take care. Scott 🤗🙏❤️
