A to Z

Hey Siri, am I a writer?”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that. Could you repeat that?”

Am I a WRI-TER?”

“I really couldn’t say.”

Couldn’t she just reply, “Anyone who writes is a writer!” (I’ll keep asking her; she changes her answers frequently)?

To BE a writer, I must write. For many weeks at the beginning of this year I had a daily prompt. It ended with a change of seasons. Finding a balance in life is not always an easy task; particularly when you have a true desire to do one thing well and often. Writing is listed in my “to do’s” for each week just like an item on a grocery list. And when a surprise gift of time occurs, I immediately feel the urge to write. Each morning, as soon as my prayer ends, the words swirl. It should be as easy as 1,2, and 3…just like A to Z.

What do you see from A to B?
Do you feel anything from C to D?
Can E and F stir your soul?
Will G and H make you whole?
I and J might not go well,
Then things might change with K and L.
Should M and N change your heart,
Use O and P and then restart.
You’ll learn again at Q and R,
By S and T, you’ve come so far.
Could U and V still make you grow?
At W and X will you plateau?
By the end who will you be?
Y all that matters is the Z.
Remember what you’ve learned and heard,
Use wisdom when you select your word.
What you live from A to Z
Will one day be your legacy.

Have faith 💚

Hello Siri? You may have basic answers, but you always lack heart. You truly ARE a writer! A-Z means everything to me…you just put it into words, yet again. Wow!! Keep the words flowing on to paper…write away.. Amazing!
Your legacy shines through. I’m a Q- Z, just wait and see. I am also your biggest fan…. your poetry is is a masterpiece. Love you….Kriddy

      1. Yes, I made a huge decision. I’m downsizing from my current RV to a Class C and begin next year in a different state ~working my way around to write and travel. It’s taking a lot of planning but Gods on my side. 💚

  1. Very lovely poem. ❤ Don't worry about whether you're a writer or not. Just write. ❤

I had to try that out. What I came away with is Siri doesn't hear very well. She thought I said, "rider." Her answer, "I really couldn't say, Martha." When I asked her again, pronouncing "write-er" carefully she said, "I have no opinion on that." So she has opinions?

"Doubt not, O poet, but persist. Say, 'It is in me, and shall out.' Stand there, baulked and dumb, stuttering and stammering, hissed and hooted, stand and strive, until, at last, rage draw out of thee that dream-power which every night shows thee is thine own; a power transcending all limit and privacy, and by virtue of which a man is the conductor of the whole river of electricity. Nothing walks, or creeps, or grows, or exists, which must not in turn arise and walk before him as exponent of his meaning. Comes he to that power, his genius is no longer exhaustible. All the creatures, by pairs and by tribes, pour into his mind as into a Noah's ark, to come forth again to people a new world. This is like the stock of air for our respiration, or for the combustion of our fireplace, not a measure of gallons, but the entire atmosphere if wanted. And therefore the rich poets, as Homer, Chaucer, Shakspeare, and Raphael, have obviously no limits to their works, except the limits of their lifetime, and resemble a mirror carried through the street, ready to render an image of every created thing." Ralph Waldo Emerson, "The Poet"

    1. Siri has some facts but seems to lack the life experience I look for in counsel 🧐. I’ve read and re-read the Emerson quote. It’s perfect. 💚 “stock of air” “limits of their lifetime “…yesterday I mustered more strength to get on a trail. A friend, celebrating her 63rd bday, visited with me. I shared some new plans in my life (which will undoubtedly propel my dream of writing daily) and she said, “the only thing holding you back is YOU”. Thank you always for encouragement. I imagine you sharing this walking the Big Empty ❤️💕🤗🐶

      1. I asked Siri if she dreams of electric sheep and she said she dreams of flying. For real. They’ve programs some Philip K. Dick allusions into that thing.

As for writing, the only person in the world it matters to is you. So why not do it? Even if you end up rich and famous, and people make money from your work, the reality is that it’s still you. ❤ Do it for love.

  3. This poem was so beautiful to read. It at first seems so simple, but the complexity behind each line I could come back to again, and again, and find new nuances to ponder.

It is one of the most important things in life. We are a dancer because we dance. We are a baker because we bake. We are a musician because we play music. We are an artist because we paint/sculpt/create. We are a writer because we write. As simple as that. Thank you for reminding me of this. I’m almost finished the first draft of my first book, and it is a really exciting time.

Keep on keeping on being awesome. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your support and comments. It delights me that you found the nuances behind the “life” lines. Isn’t that we want as writers? Or dancers? Or bakers?….to connect. Congratulations on your accomplishment! I hope to one day share the same. I appreciate you! 😊

    1. Aww! So you know, I’ve never thought of myself as clever so this made my heart smile huge! And here’s a fact that will make you smile: I grew up in Clever, Missouri. My parents still live there! Hugs and blessings 🤗💕

  4. Wow! I enjoyed your prose Karla with its creative spirit as well as taking us on a journey with a writer. You are right on about a writer’s words bring her legacy. Sometimes, our day takes off when we move beyond the “A” moment and find the next word.

  5. I love what you did with the alphabet here. That may sound funny, but, in order from A to Z, I simply see a bunch of letters. Your poem made me think about the journey in between. That is the sign of a gifted writer – taking people on a journey with not just words AND letters.
